Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] post-surgical care -- a conversation to which others should add points that work
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Our post surgery ferrets stay in a barn style carrier for the first 3
days. We are better able to watch for any unusual issues and to monitor
food/water intake. After that, they are moved to a playpen for 9/10
days. There is no climbing allowed but plenty of bedding. We don't use
any type of bedding that might catch on stitches.
We feed Science Diet A/D watered down the first few days until the
ferret feels well enough to eat kibble. After that, turkey baby food is
used when giving any type of med, especially pred.
There is no activity allowed expect for a little walking around until
the stitches are out for any abdominal surgery.
We also use all the provided pain meds, even if the ferret is acting
like they feel better.

We followed this just last month when our smallest ferret had Adrenal
surgery (both glands removed) and she did extremely well.

[Some meds should be given with food,
but not all. You probably have not yet
had ones that can't be given with food.
