Dear Ferret People,

Thank you for your thoughts you have put into our mystery ferret disease. After much thinking and discussion we have been able to rule out many things but we have not been able too rule out Listeriosis. Unless evidence emerges to the contrary we can safely assume that the ferrets, Guinea pig and rabbits were affected by
Listeria monocytogenes, a gram-positive bacterium.

We still need this to be confirmed or otherwise with pathology tests.

And the most difficult task will be to somehow remove the culprit from the animals' environment or remove the animals from the contaminated environment. But it will be impossible to identify carriers of the disease. If you read the story of L monocytogenes you will realise it is a very 'slippery costumer'. It is not only ubiquitous but also infected individuals may show no clinical signs or become ill and recover or die very quickly. Incubation period is from 1 to 90 days.

Regards,
Christina
