The cause is in him himself.
I'll just look for a few possible additional causes -- as well as the
ones your vet mentioned -- since you asked for that, but i lack time
so others will also have to search.

With a female estrus is also a cause but you say this is a male.
In some animals certain toxins can also cause this, but I don't know
if they can in ferrets and don't have time to search right now. Some
causes in general according to veterinary dictionary:
Pteridium aquilinum, trichlorethylene extracted soybean meal,
nitrofurans, and stacybotrytoxicosis.
You may want to do a search.
