To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have been searching for photos for you of
the adrenal "hot spots" (Alicia's term which
I think often describes it well for appearance)
which look like very red bruises at first. Although
I could not find a photo this may be of help:
http://www.heidihoefer.com/pages/ferrets/ferret_adrenal_disease.htm
In some long-standing cases, bone marrow suppression
can occur and result in anemia and low platelet counts.
These ferrets bruise readily and may develop small red
blood spots in the skin.
so you might want to consider a blood test for anemia,
and if surgery is not planned see past posts about
Epogen, while if surgery is planned you'll want to know
that blood transfusions can be done with ferrets
readily since separate blood groups have not been
found (in case needed).
Examples which can help you:

I narrowed the search to posts from only one vet
just because I lack time but you may want to also
search for similar terms with vet addresses containing
williams, ferrethealer, suedvm, drkaren, and others.

Now, just to be complete for readers: a person has
to be careful to NOT confuse these with other types
of skin "spots", for example, mast cell tumors which
are malignant in OTHER animals but almost never in
ferrets (and the ones which have been malignant in
ferrets have been internal, not skin ones).

Some info on some common skin tumors or growths:
http://www.afip.org/consultation/vetpath/ferrets/Mast/mastcell.html
(look like raised red areas, then scabs, which itch a lot and
come and go, or flat scaly areas)
http://www.afip.org/consultation/vetpath/ferrets/PDF/neoplasia.pdf
http://www.afip.org/consultation/vetpath/ferrets/Sebep/sebep.html
(small ones can look similar to mast cell tumors early on,
warty at first, scary looking later, but like mast cell skin
tumors in ferrets not a high risk situation)
and there certainly are others.

I highly recommend reading every article any FHL member can in
http://www.afip.org/consultation/vetpath/ferrets/index.html

and in
http://ferrethealth.org/archive/FHL5813
I have links to some of the skin diseases ferrrets can
get.
