Subject: [ferrethealth] Chemistry Panel Bloodwork before a surgery? How long?
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

I have had many ferrets go in without any pre op labs. Some had them months before. It is a good idea to get a pre op lab on a ferret over 4, or sickly, weight loss, etc. But is it absolutely necessary? I would defer that to the vets, I think you can pick up severe anemia and evidence of kidney failure that would perhaps make surgery a risk- and so it is helpful to have done. Timing? IN humans 6 months is fine for some tests, and 1 month prior for others ( also some based on age and prior history), I don't know that there is any such rules for animals.

If the labs done prior showed areas of concern, like failing kidneys , then it would be worthwhile to get a follow up test done to see what is going on over the past 3 months, if they were pretty normal I don't think you need to worry.

I am thinking you will be having labs done afterwards at some point to at least monitor glucose.

Hi all, I have another question... this is in regards to my boy River, whom I lost the day after his insulinoma surgery.

River last had a Chemistry Panel done on 11/01/07. His surgery was 01/22/08. The vet is telling me that this bw done on Nov 1st was sufficient for him to have surgery almost 3 months later.... (never mind that I even called and *said* I wanted the bw done again!)

Can any vets, techs, experienced owners tell me that you sould consider this acceptable? From all that I understand, regarding ferrets specifically... you should have the Panel done within a week of surgery??

Thank you,
Andrea
