Anja,

Some ferrets' eyes are naturally red, its what they are born with.
There is some thinking that ferrets with red or pink eyes do not see as
well as other ferrets and some are indeed blind. Blind ferrets do
manage quite well in a familiar environment since they form cognitive
maps of the area and navigate by smell.

My case is somewhat different because my ferret's eyes were not
naturally red but are becoming red.

Ferrets that are all white, or have white patches on their heads do have
a higher probability of being deaf. This is genetic.

The suggested test is to turn on the vacuum cleaner or one sharp bang on
a pot near him and watch to see what he does. If he does not react at
all, he is probably deaf.

I have a silver mitted sprite who reacts to some sounds but not all
sounds. She will react to a vacuum cleaner but is not freaked out by it
at all. I have concluded that she is either deaf in one ear or has
diminished hearing in both ears or some combination thereof.

If he didn't hear you approaching or calling his name, and makes no
response to a peeping toy, is all white - does put the odds in favor of
deafness.

sometimes startles very much when I pick him up although I called his
name before. He also doesn't react at all at the peeping sound of a
rubber toy, something that ferrets normally seem to find fascinating.

Does anyone have a good test to see if he's deaf?
