I have a friend who has twice been through meningitis as an adult, which is rare. In her case it was because she had been a car accident and a bit of the brain lining was caught in the fracture, and acted like a wick. This simulates what happens in young mammals. The plates of the skull are not fused in young ones so there is easier access for the disease than there is in animals whose skulls have stopped growing and have fused.
